Abbott makes final campaign stop in San Antonio as Hinojosa pushes for new direction

Gov. Greg Abbott made his final campaign stop before Election Day in San Antonio, asking Texans for a record fourth term as Democratic challenger Gina Hinojosa urged voters to take the state in a new direction.

Abbott acknowledged the race will be close.

“Listen, we pretty much have a tie game. The game is going to be decided tomorrow, by those who go vote tomorrow. We need everyone in this room to be involved in that process,” Abbott said.

Asked why Texans concerned about affordability should return him to office after 12 years as governor, Abbott pointed to jobs and wages.

“Because the economy in Texas is the best economy in America,” he said. “More Texans have a job than ever before. Under my watch, more than 2.6 million Texans have been able to get a job, their paycheck is higher than ever before, and the poverty rate is at an all-time low.”

Hinojosa made her own case to voters feeling financial pressure.

“Texas can’t afford to keep the lights on. We have the most bankruptcies of any state in America, and it is our small businesses who are struggling to keep their doors open. That, my friends is Greg Abbott’s record,” Hinojosa said.

The two candidates offered sharply different plans for the next four years.

“When we pass my affordability agenda, I’m going to stop building the wall on the southern border. I’m going to build it on the northern border, the western border, the eastern border,” Abbott said.

Hinojosa said she is confident heading into Election Day.

“In this moment in history I am so grateful, I am so honored to be in this fight with you, because together, if we do everything we can, everything within our power to meet this moment in history, then I will be the next governor of Texas,” Hinojosa said.

Polls in Bexar County are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day. Voters in line by 7 p.m. are still allowed to vote, and voters may cast ballots at any polling location in the county.
